The best way make sure you are safe when eating something new (ie: with the Lap Band) is to follow a few extra rules.
1. Have a smaller bite than normal, to chew your food 25-30 times, instead of the normal 20. Follow all the rules in the back of the Lap Band Food and Nutrition Guide for Gastric Banding by Trudi Williams (can be purchased on the internet or at this office) have a bottle of Soda Water on hand. If you find that something is stuck in the band (ie you have an elephant sitting on your chest,) then have a gulp or a few gulps of soda water and you should find that it may flush the food through or bring it up.
If you are standing when you are eating, you will find that you are not concentrating on eating, therefore you may be eating in a rush . You need to sit when you are eating, therefore you will concentrate on eating.
Another tip is when you are at home, is to turn the TV off and put the phone off the hook. That way, once again you are concentrating on your food.
If you are having trouble with some food, it might be best to see a dietician, if you have not already so done, one who understands about the lap band.
Here are some helpful rules that Dr Nicholson has for our Lap Band patients, every time you have had an adjustment.
Day of adjustment -THICK FLUIDS ONLY
Day two after adjustment - SLOPS/SOFT DIET ONLY
Day three after adjustment - NORMAL DIET.
If by the end of day three, you are not able to take a normal diet, you should be contacting your adjusting Surgeon. P.s. normal does not usually contain fibrous foods or putty like foods, eg. steak or bread.
